Organization Description

Service(s) descriptionThe Latino Men and Boys and Latina Mentoring and Achievement Programs are school-based, culturally rooted, academically comprehensive programs for Latinox students ages 12-20. Working with 200 boys and young men and 50 young women and their families to improve key wellbeing indicators in health, education, behavior, family interaction, and career planning. The program aims to reach Latinx youth to help them choose, and remain on, a positive path in order to significantly increase graduation rates for Latinx students in Oakland as well as to promote healthier more resilient neighborhoods where you can be a productive and positive force on behalf of their communities. Over 244 students and graduates have participated.
Program impactIn direct collaboration with their school based health centers, and using culturally responsive approaches and positive male role models, the program provides a range of services and activities in critical areas such as academic support, mentoring, health and wellness programs, as well as career development. Key to the program is the use of a “healing informed approach” focused on helping Latinx youth overcome the personal and community trauma related to the social conditions in which they live. This approach allows our staff to help build their leadership potential and allows students to recognize themselves and their cultures as assets to the wellbeing of their families and their communities.

Community programs are organized into categories known as Community School Elements. All community programs associated with The Unity Council are listed below and each program may be provided at 1 or more schools. You can use the 'Show Details' buttons to learn more about each program.
