Program Description | The Unity Council’s Latino Men and Boys program applies a youth development framework that leverages culturally-rooted mentorship to cultivate physical, psychological, and emotional safety for youth of color. Our model promotes Academic Social Emotional Learning and aligns with OUSD’s PBIS system to support historically marginalized students and parents.
School Climate/RJ Practices
LMB students engage in regular and intentional reflective practices (restorative circles) that encourage SEL competencies over an extended period of time (7th - 12th grade). Mentors also contribute to COST team meetings for students who struggle to meet academic and behavioral expectations.
Mentorship
LMB mentors teach, model, and reinforce desired pro-social classroom skills (following directions the first time, actively listening, waiting patiently, empathy for others, etc.). Through culturally-rooted mentorship, mentors establish an environment of trust as a protective factor for trauma impacted youth. Mentors also provide Individualized Student Supports (home visits, phone calls, parent meetings, RJ circles) that engage at-risk youth and their families.
