Program Description | The Unity Council’s Latina Mentoring and Achievement Program applies a youth development framework that leverages culturally-rooted mentorship to cultivate physical, psychological, and emotional safety for female identified youth. Our model promotes Academic Social Emotional Learning and aligns with OUSD’s PBIS system to support historically marginalized students and parents.
School Climate/RJ Practices
LMA students engage in regular and intentional reflective practices (restorative circles) that encourage SEL competencies over an extended period of time (9-12th grade). Femtors also contribute to COST team meetings for students who struggle to meet academic and behavioral expectations.
Mentorship
LMA Femtors teach, model, and reinforce desired pro-social classroom skills (following directions the first time, actively listening, waiting patiently, empathy for others, etc.). Through culturally-rooted femetorship, femtors establish an environment of trust as a protective factor for trauma impacted youth. Femtors also provide Individualized Student Supports (home visits, phone calls, parent meetings, RJ circles) that engage at-risk youth and their families.
