Organization Description
Service(s) description | CEO Youth is an entrepreneurship program providing an engaging curriculum, internship opportunities, and case management supports. This program is offered at McClymmonds High School and is specifically designed to support students involved in foster care and/or probation in setting and achieving educational and career goals. Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation program provides consultation to teachers and parents about developmental needs and strengths, age appropriate interventions at home and in school, and assessments and referrals for students needing additional supports. Services are provided at 6 OUSD Child Development Centers. EXCEL utilizes a multidisciplinary team to support students in Intensive Counseling Enriched Classrooms through mental health services, case management, and behavioral intervention. Our programs are at Howard Elementary and Fremont High School. Family Resource Center is a community hub for parents to gain and give resources, receive training and education, and engage families in the schools to improve their child's educational outcomes. The FRC is at the New Highland Academy & Rise Community School campus. HOPE provides mental health services, teacher consultation, and school-wide positive culture initiatives at 8 OUSD elementary schools and 3 high schools. The West Oakland Initiative was designed to address chronic truancy and poor outcomes for children in the West Oakland community. Through the initiative, we have identified 35 kindergarten and 1st graders from the 4 West Oakland OUSD elementary schools who have missed a significant amount of school. Students participate in the Oakland Freedom Schools summer program, receive intensive case management, and ongoing monitoring and support through their OUSD career. Oakland Freedom Schools (OFS) is a 6-week summer literacy and cultural enrichment program serving 120 scholars, ages 5-16 which runs annually from June – July. With a 10:1 classroom ratio, the program provides two healthy meals (breakfast and lunch), a snack, 150 minutes of academic literacy instruction, afternoon enrichment activities which allow scholars to pursue interest in music, theater, the arts, and other developmental activities, and weekly field trips. |
Program impact | Students who participate in our programs attend school more regularly, are more emotionally engaged to learn, make significant literacy gains, feel safer at school, and are functioning in the least restrictive environment possible. We see an improvement in behavioral and emotional functioning for the children and youth who participate in our programs. Caregivers in our programs report a better understanding of their child's needs and strengths, have a greater repertoire of parenting skills, feel more connected to their school and the larger community, and are getting the resources they need. Families in our programs are connecting and staying together. |
