Organization Description

Service(s) descriptionThe Prescott Circus Theatre (PCT) is a nationally recognized after-school performing arts education program for Oakland youth, now in our 35th year! We provide the opportunity for Oakland children and youth to work with caring professional teaching artists and youth workers to learn physical circus and theater skills, cross cultural understanding of these traditions, and the hands on experience of creating and performing an original production. Through our high quality and in depth programs, our students learn, perform, and teach skills such as acrobatics, juggling, stilt dancing, hambone body percussion, unicycle, and clowning / improvisation. Our curriculum promotes the confidence and skills our youth need to thrive on stage, in school, and in life.
Program impactThrough our program, students develop a knowledge and appreciation for circus and theater arts, participate in healthy physical activities, and engage their creative selves to offer new performances for their communities each year. In addition to building creativity, knowledge, and community connections, students learn essential life skills that support school and work success. Circus arts learning teaches teamwork, builds self confidence, and demonstrates the rewards of perseverance to overcome challenges. Our students consistently report feeling less shy, more confident, and better able to work with peers and adults after participating in the circus program.
