Program Description | Generation Alive's Something to Eat Program uses the vehicles of hunger and poverty to engage youth in understanding their role in addressing community needs. Beginning with a school assembly, youth are educated about hunger in their community and the world. They are then challenged to show that "compassion is an action" by raising funds for and then hand-packaging thousands of meals in a single school-wide food packing event. At a reduced cost of 25 cents per meal, students are able to assemble nutritious meals (consisting of rice, soy, dried vegetables, cheese powder, and vitamins) that are distributed throughout the community through partnerships with food banks, food pantries, and senior centers. These meals address local hunger issues and help to alleviate food insecurity needs for low-income children, teens, adults, and seniors. |
