Program DescriptionMulticultural Music in our Schools TK-6 music programs started in 1998 to address the decreasing availability of music education in schools. In 2018-19, OYC works with seven elementary schools in Oakland and Richmond serving full grades and/or full schools with yearlong, sequential, comprehensive music education programs. Sing Me A Story TK project began in January 2018, serving 4 OUSD TK classes with music instruction that connected and used picture books to teach musical concepts while reinforcing and supporting early literacy development (oral language development, vocabulary, sight words, and comprehension). In 2018-19, we expect to add this to all TK classes in our full school programs and serve 6 additional schools with the TK 15 week program. When funding is available, students receive copies of the books used in the program to build their home libraries.
