Organization Description
Service(s) description | Target Audience for M.O.B: College Black men and women to mentor underrepresented Black youth in K-12 within Oakland Unified School District: McClymonds High School and West Oakland Middle School as current partners for MOB outreach. Describe how this program will support your mission: This program will support my mission by providing culturally sensitive and personalized services to meet the needs of Black youth and all students in OUSD. At McClymonds and West Oakland Middle School in particular, the mentorship, workshops and cultural dialogue sessions highlighted in the below outcomes and methods section supports my mission of strengthening a pipeline to college for K-12 Black youth and increasing a sense of belonging and personal, academic, cultural identity development and professional development for OUSD youth. Outcome 1: K-12 outreach and increased personalized mentorship for Black men and women from underserved communities by establishing a sense of belonging, authentic cultural expression, identity development and academic support services (tutoring and after school programming) to impact success of OUSD students. Method 1: *College M.O.B. student mentors recruit and build caseloads of Middle School and high school students in working with them to build solid foundations for high expectations and college preparation. Establishing cohorts of students beginning in middle school and in their 9th grade year in high school. College M.O.B. students (MOB mentors) are trained to work with K-12 students at respective school sites to make sure they are on track with their A-G requirements, exceeding minimum expectations in and out of the classroom by providing a sense of personal support with issues students may be dealing with in their family, community or personal life. In addition, MOB mentors provide academic support via tutoring, wrap around support services and classroom support to impact development of K-12 mentees. MOB student mentees at respective OUSD school sites will be tracked throughout their middle school and high school years in their respective cohorts.*College Campus visits, M.O.B. “Big Sister and Brother Day." MOB Director and college MOB mentors coordinate campus visits for K-12 students to visit respective colleges and spend the day with college MOB mentors at their respective institutions (campus tours, student panels, classroom sit-ins, lunch, dorm room hang out sessions etc). Design: MOB mentors spend 10-12 hours a week at their school sites (which consist of individual meetings with their mentees/cohorts and cultural MOB intragroup dialogue sessions (bi-weekly). MOB Outreach Mentors receive stipends for the Fall and Spring semesters for their work. Evaluation The success of this program is measured by utilizing both qualitative and quantitative data in assessing the effectiveness of the M.O.B. organization in terms of impact and engagement and other measurements for success. Most important, utilizing qualitative methods that look at how students make meaning of their experiences in the MOB program and how students are impacted by a sense of belonging, culture, Black identity development. As a Doctoral candidate in the San Francisco State University Educational Leadership Program, I measure the impact of M.O.B. as the basis for my passion, research and overall dissertation in the Doctoral program |
Program impact | This program builds sense of belonging, identity development, cultural validation and confidence rooted in a college access mentor approach in working with students. While increased college preparation is one goal of MOB. We are more so focused on affirming student lived experiences and creating leadership development through supporting college student mentors in their work with OUSD K-12 mentees. |
