Organization Description

Service(s) descriptionWe provide trained AmeriCorps members to implement literacy intervention during the school day in six kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms in one local school district (OUSD). The AmeriCorps members also provide a literacy-based extended learning (after-school) program for K-2 grade students at each of the six school sites. Our program also offers instruction in social-emotional development to our students, and we provide opportunities for school-based parent engagement (i.e. family literacy nights). We work in partnership with six principals to identify the students that receive additional academic support in efforts to improve academic achievement. Our AmeriCorps members participate in Professional Development with partner schools for continuity in classroom management and behavioral expectations.
Program impactIn the 2018-19 academic year, Literacy skills improved 88% for SSL in after school programs. Students improved in overall literacy skills exceeding 85% making gains. 42% achieved accelerated growth, improving their reading skills at a rate greater than standard expectations for their grade level.
