Organization Description

Service(s) descriptionOur lessons focus on painting, sculpting, sketching, dance/movement, singing, traditional arts, eco-literacy and urban culture-intertwined with common core standards. Special projects are shared school-wide throughout the year and saved to display again as decorations for our annual year-end Culture Night event. Through this program, K-5 students learn about different ethnicities that correspond to cultural and historical monthly celebrations. Each presentation begins with a history lesson of the group we are focusing on and is followed with a complimentary art project. Our school has a culturally diverse core group of parents, grandparents and relatives who are professional working artists and social justice advocates. Many of them make time to help facilitate our projects to ensure authenticity. They are also invited and encouraged to give presentations during school assemblies.
Program impactThrough this multi-cultural arts program, Cleveland is creatively engaging in cultural sensitivity by including the numerous ethnicities that populate our student body. Our school is made up of students who speak over 40+ languages. The possibilities are endless when it comes to highlighting unique continental traditions through art. All 17 teachers and 16 classes have experienced multiple lessons over the past two years and have been participatory and engaged in each project at all times. Students and teachers are invited to contribute their personal experiences to create dialogue between each other during the lessons. This sparks curiosity in knowing that someone from their past might have done this as part of their cultural practice. The lessons also open up conversations at home with family members and encourages the students to look deeper into where their roots evolve. Our vision is for all participants to use the experiences gained by the activities in their everyday lives. This encourages our school community to focus on openness and connection around the diversity of our school. By promoting cultural sensitivity around the different ethnicities in our community, everyone gains a better understanding of each others’ similarities and we see that it is building more respect for our differences. In order to appeal to all ages, we invite students, staff and parent volunteers to debrief and share ideas that can improve the lessons at the end of each session.
