Organization Description
Service(s) description | We offer chess lessons, usually one hour per week, to grades K-12, usually after school, occasionally during the school day. Our hour classes include 20 minutes (approximately) of lesson and 40 minutes of supervised play. Classes have 10-20 students, unless during the school day, in which case we include the whole class, however many students that may be. We provide the boards and sets, and also offer scholarships to low income families, and occasionally offer free classes paid for by grants which we obtain. |
Program impact | We believe that chess, which can be considered to be one of history’s most valuable educational tools, enhances student's abilities in reading, science, and math, along with growth in critical cognitive abilities such as deducing, hypothesizing, strategic thinking, logic, future thinking and judgement. Beyond academia, chess also appears to influence social behavior, including self-esteem, respect for others, patience and old-fashioned notions of good manners. |
