Organization Description

Service(s) descriptionHarnessing the power of soccer as a universal language, Soccer Without Borders (SWB) offers year-round soccer, team-building, educational and life-skills training for recently arrived refugee, asylee, and immigrant youth. We focus on meeting the multiple needs of newcomer youth through the platform of sports. Last year, over 400 youth from 26 countries participated in Oakland and utilized the field to make friendships across cultures. School is challenging for English Language learners, and SWB offers them encouragement, and motivates and rewards healthy behaviors; SWB coaches monitor homework, class attendance, and academic achievement, and leverage game play with school progress and player contracts.
Program impactAs youth face the difficult realities of building a new life in the United States, the SWB program is a space they feel safe and respected. For many, the concept of classroom learning is foreign. But the sport of soccer, and the basic concept of play, provides a familiar platform for healthy learning and growth. Youth from different backgrounds find a common ground on the soccer field and build cross-cultural relationships. The development of this social support system simultaneously empowers individuals and strengthens the community.
