| Service(s) description | OUSD music teachers choose an ensemble of their most deserving string students to receive weekly coaching as well as extra time individually for technical instruction on their respective instruments. Participating students receive 9 weeks both semesters, two visits a week: a coaching session and the second visit for individual instruction by a professional musician assigned to each of the five participating middle schools and one high school. Three Musicianship Workshops each year are a vital part of the H.O.U.S.E. program, promoting bonding through extra musical activities and team building offering the H.O.U.S.E. ensembles an opportunity to develop friendships with students from other Oakland schools. They play for each other, hone their music and ensemble skills and enjoy performances by H.O.U.S.E. coaches and special guest artists. There is a final performance by all the ensembles in the spring of each year. |
| Program impact | We have noticed over the past six years an increase in the overall abilities of the string students in OUSD middle schools. This is shown in the level of performance that happens at the annual String Fest held at Roosevelt Middle School as well as the final HOUSE performances. The OUSD music teachers involved feel the HOUSE students are a particular asset to their programs. |
