Organization Description

Service(s) descriptionThe Young Musicians Choral Orchestra is a youth development program using music as a tool to transform the lives of low-income children from the Bay Area. Each student receives a scholarship valued at $12,000 each. This fee covers the cost of weekly private lessons, music, instrument rental, academic tutoring, SAT training, live auditions and performance clothing. The majority of our students come from Oakland and surrounding areas. The BART train is our connector. The Summer Institute is being held at Montera Middle School on Ascot Drive. Our budget for 2015/2016 is $1,247,120. Having successfully completed the transition from fiscal sponsorship at UC Berkeley while implementing a full array of administrative and programmatic activities in 2013/2014, YMCO is continuing our steady progress as an exemplary leader producing outstanding young scholar-musicians of color. Today, YMCO is the only youth choral orchestra in the nation: every student both plays an orchestral instrument and performs as a vocalist. To ensure that all students can engage in this remarkable opportunity, YMCO students who major in non-orchestral music traditions (vocals, guitar, piano, etc.) also undertake ongoing, high quality training in an orchestral instrument as their musical "minor," thereby expanding both their musical capacities and their performance experience. As the culminating event for our annual summer and winter seasons, all YMCO students perform both a major choral work and a major symphonic work. 100% of our graduates go on to college, many on full scholarships. The list of colleges include: Juilliard, Manhattan School of Music, Oberlin Conservatory, New England Conservatory, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UCLA, USC, Yale, Harvard, Brown, Williams and University of Michigan. Currently serving 80 low-income students from the Bay Area, over the next five to seven years YMCO plans to expand the total cohort of students to 110, so as to produce a full philharmonic sound, modeled on the structure and sound of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.
Program impactThe impact of YMCO has been extraordinary. Over the past 12 years, over 150 students have graduated and gone on to prestigious institutions across the nation. The students are doublers and triplers - singers who play clarinet, flute; saxophonists who sing and play flute, clarinet, English Horn. This fact alone makes them more appealing as college applicants.
