Organization Description
Service(s) description | Unlike many other science classes that are demo or lecture-based, our program takes a unique hands-on approach to teaching where the students personally build the toys. In Toyology, students make and take home a different science toy in each hour long class. While students are having a blast making toys, they are learning major scientific concepts such as electricity, energy, gravity, motion, light, magnetism, and more. The notebook in which students record their science words and related principles from each class is theirs to keep at the end of the session. When parents arrive for pick-up, our students are eager to show off their inventions and explain the science behind how they work. We also include a science note with every project to help families continue the learning at home. |
Program impact | In recent years, science has basically been ignored in our public schools. Instead, the focus in education today seems to be on gaining only the skills and knowledge necessary to pass the state- and federally-mandated tests. “Things were different when I was growing up,” said Andy Feinberg, a geneticist at Johns Hopkins University. “It was the time of Sputnik, the race into space, and everybody was caught up in science. They thought it was important. They thought it was exciting. They thought it was cool. Somehow, we must invigorate that spirit. The culture of discovery drives our country forward, and we can’t afford to lose it.” Our goal is to revitalize the culture of discovery that was so prevalent in years past. |
