Organization Description

Service(s) descriptionWe bring a social capital to school sites: a team consisting of a campus leader and teaching fellows joins the school staff for the entire day to provide an extended learning time experience that is carefully aligned with the school's vision and theory of action. Teaching fellows are college graduates who serve through Americorps and commit to us for two years. They are full-time and receive a stipend, benefits, and intensive professional development. Teaching fellows push into classrooms during the regular school hours to support site faculty and provide academic support, social-emotional learning experiences, and choice activities in the afternoon. Twice a week, so-called "Citizen Teachers," community members from individuals to representatives from CBOs, to employees from Bay Area companies, come to campus to teach "apprenticeships" in their area of expertise and passion. each student picks two 10-week experiential learning opportunities per semester in a wide variety of topics from robotics to yoga to mock trial.
Program impactExternal and internal evaluations show that participation in Citizen Schools's program enable students to gain an additional 4-6 months of content mastery compared to similarly profiled peers who do not participate. Students also show increased retention through high school graduation and increased pursuit of post-secondary educational paths. We work to build the social and emotional skills along with the 21st century skills of all our students while building their academic skills.

Community programs are organized into categories known as Community School Elements. All community programs associated with Citizen Schools California are listed below and each program may be provided at 1 or more schools. You can use the 'Show Details' buttons to learn more about each program.
